The truth is there are only 5 search engines that account for 75% of search engines results. There are about 10 that account for 13% of the search engines results, and about 6 or 7 more that power, or provide information to those fifteen. This is a little deceiving, sounds to good to be true right? Well it is and it isn't. Being in this business we know the two methods these companies are using. One is not really legitimate in our book, and the other is at best questionable. The first tactic is changing your keywords to scarce keyword's that have very little searches done. Example, you come to me with an online shoe store and you want to be ranked number one. Your keywords now are buy shoes online, online shoes, buy shoes, so on so on. This company will find that air jordan, golf shoes and shoe laces all are easy targets to get the #1 spot. However none of these have any relevance to what you are selling do they. In addition there are only 25 searches per day with these keywords. Now here is a tip, using keywords with less competition is not a bad idea, as long as they are related to what your site is about and they have ample searches. This in fact is a very good thing to do. The second way these companies get you a #1 listing is kind of like the first. They change your keywords, like in the first method, then go to a pay per click service (overture, Google adwords) and spend 1/3 of your money bidding on the crappy keywords they reassigned your site. Pretty sneaky, huh. We are on the verge of offering full web page optimization and web site promotion campaigns. There is reason for this, and you should think hard about using a site like this. Two words, automated submission. Automated search engines submissions have problems, some search engines won't accept automated submissions, and relying on a software program and not checking whether it was successful, is not a good way to spend money. Sure so they can make more money. Here is the deal on frequency of submission. If you update content frequently, haven't submitted in more then a month or never have submitted you should. Once a month is plenty, and for a high ranking site once a month is essential. We have seen sites in past that have been successful and skipped a month and it had to take 4 months to get the rankings back to where they were. Secondly, you have to watch out to what search engines you submit to this frequently. Some search engines will ban you for spamming if you submit once a month. We select only the engines that accept monthly submissions, if you pick our multi month submission package we only submit to the search engines that accept after the first month.
5. You have to use paid inclusions to get a good ranking with search engines.
This is complete hogwash. We have helped many sites achieve high rankings and they are not using paid inclusions. If you have the money for paid inclusions they aren't a bad thing. We aren't here to help the multi million dollar corporate web site. We offer an essential service that everybody on the internet needs, but most do not have the time, or money in this case for paid inclusions. The bad part about paid inclusions are that once you quit paying you're site has to fend for itself. Why not build a site and get ranked the old fashioned way and not have to worry about getting a good search engine ranking.
