What does Google look for?

Keywords are #1 with Google.
Starting to see a relevant topic on web page optimization? Much like Inktomi, Google loves keywords, but the keyword density of your page can make or break you. Too much density can hurt you just as much as too little. A good rule of thumb is to make the first 25 words of visable text keyword rich. All search engines, especially Google love this.

Concentrate on achieving the following.

  • Keywords in the URL
  • Keywords in the Title Tag (4-10 words)
  • Keywords in the Description and Keywords Tag (although Google may not use them it's good practice)
  • Keywords in ALT Tags
  • Keywords in the body (remember keyword rich original content)
  • Keywords in Links (links to your web page using your keywords)
Update pages and add new content often

Choosing a good URL
A good URL with keywords contained is highly underestimated. If your URL sucks, you will have a harder time with rankings in the major search engines. If you have the oppurtunity, pick a url with keywords already in it.

Title Meta Tag

The title metatag is about the only meta tag Google really looks at. Do use a description and a keyword meta tag though. Some other search engines use it, and it doesn't hurt anything. 4-10 words, with the most important keywords first. Always avoid stop words, a, the, an , it , but, you get the idea.

Theme Based Web Sites

Theme based web sites tend to do better with Google. This means that there is a reoccuring theme throughout all pages on your site. This may be hard to do depending on your field of endevaour, but is a good idea. The more content that is useful and related the better off your site will be when the Googlebot finds it.

Getting Listed
Google states that it will find your web page regardless if you do not submit to them, but it can't hurt to try to speed things up. Googlebot will follow all the links in your site so make sure all your pages are linked and remember to only submit your homepage. Get listed with Google- Google Site Submit.
